The red bike in the photo is a BMW F650GS and is a popular commuter/touring bike. Upright position, luggage, ABS brakes, great gas mileage, around $7K new. Don't let its looks fool you; it's a great road bike.
Of course there are seamingly hundreds of choices and just like anything else... keep looking until you find something that clicks with you.

I had a 97 F650, think it was made by Aprilla back then. Great bike, very predictable sliding, capable of staying with the sportbikes in the tight stuff. Also no monkey butt with this bike. I took it down to Mexico, rode 50 miles of the Baja 1000 route and back, around 800 miles in 1 day with 0 comfort problems.
