If one doesn't mind the additional maintenance, these can be good bikes for learning. They tend to be a bit heavy, but are very forgiving compared to newer bikes of the same displacement. And I'm paying $73 per year on insurance.
Not sure what the weight on the 500 is, but this bike stock is 380lbs. I've taken off at least 20lbs, so its pretty light. I'd love to see a pic of yours.
