I'll add my own observations from last night. I was sitting in a pizza place, using the wifi there, good view of the intersection through the wall of glass facing the intersection. It was dusk.
Every cyclist who rode through the intersection was riding without helmets, and without lights. Not even blinkies. It's illegal to ride without lights at that hour, but more importantly, it's dangerous. Which is why I mentioned the lack of helmets. If a cyclist is substantially increasing his or her risk of being hit by a car through illegal and downright stupid riding behavior, then perhaps that cyclist should be wearing a brain bucket.
Nah, easier just to blame the cagers after the predictable collision...
