I'd reccomend buying a bike from a shop since you're a first-time rider. You'll have the chance to try it out first, and you can deal with the local bike store with any problems you *will* have.

IMO, no new rider should buy a bike online. It probably won't fit you, and the uncomfortable ride will scare you away from the sport.
