A dishing tool, while not absolutely necessary is a good thing to have with an inexpensive non-self centering truing stand. It can be used to gauge the effectiveness of your eyes and the stand to make sure the rim is actually centered. they are very easy to use and take less time than flipping the wheel over and over to make sure it's centered.
