I volunteered for my towns bike census week before last. For two weekday AM's from 7-9 I observed 283 cyclist through my assigned intersection. 4 were riding on the sidewalk and all turning traffic made proper turns.
I think much depends on the intersection design regarding how easy and safe it "feels" to get to the proper place and another big contributor was the vast majority of my census counts appeared to be regular bike commuters to my eye.
