I got counted in our city's last bike census just the other day. I'm sure I got put in the "didn't stop for the stop sign" column.
I don't think I would consider those who use the crosswalk as doing something wrong or less skilled. I used to have an intersection on my commute where I observed that if the light was in a certain place in the rotation, that other cyclists who used the cross walk got through a lot faster than I did if I waited for the left turn signal. I started using the cross walk myself, or doing the 2-point turn because it was quicker.
Also, sometimes I didn't feel like stopping and waiting for a break in traffic to get over to that left turn lane. Sometimes there was no way to know that I would have to begin the merge at something other than my usual location--the traffic would be heavier for no particular reason and I didn't expect it-- so rather than wait for endless traffic I'd just do the 2-point turn.
