Better yet, take the chain ring and rear cog information and enter it into Sheldon Brown's gear calculator. You can then understand the gear relationships and map out the shift pattern. I did this for my triple/12-27 and now know which gears overlap and how many cogs to shift between each chain ring to catch the next higher/lower gear.
