Bikes: Catrike 559 I own some others but they don't get ridden very much.

You have half-step gearing. Two alternatives:

1. The techies choice. Calculate the gear inches for every gear combination on your bike. Type them out on a piece of paper and tape it to your handlebar. That'll guide you in selecting the next gear in the sequence.

2. The pragmatist's choice. Don't worry about it.

If you're riding in a hilling area just use either the big ring or the small one depending on whether you're going uphill or downhill. Whichever it is, 1. you're likely to want bigger jumps between gears than using the half step will provide and 2. by the time you make the double shift you will have lost your momentum and need a lower gear anyway.

If you're riding on a flat road, just fish around for for the "sweet spot" gear that best matches road and wind conditions.
