Trek 7.5 FX vs GT Legato 3.0

Hi all,

I'm trying to decide which of the following two bikes I like better, and I'd appreciate any input people might have. I want an urban commuter with decent components (I'm 230+ lbs).

GT Legato 3.0:

Trek 7.5 FX:

I can get the GT about $100 cheaper here in Austin at the moment. Both bikes feel quick and light. I like the slightly more laid back steering tube angle on the Trek, I like the saddle on the GT better and the Tiagra crankset is nice looking, etc. -- in other words they're both nice bikes with minor differences, and I'm sure I'd be pleased with either one. Didn't notice a difference in feel with the carbon fork on the Trek, though maybe that's more apparent over time? (Or just a myth?)

Questions: Any clear difference in component quality? Any difference in reputation between the two brands re: frame strength, etc.? Any thoughts about those wheels on the Trek?

Perhaps more imprtantly: Do the 8-speed shifters and components on the GT make the drivetrain upgrade path more difficult?

I also looked at the Trek 7.6 FX, whcih has nicer components, but the $$$ = ouch.

Thanks very much, -CLR
