FWIW, for my own bikes, by using older hubs with a threaded left ball cup I've got myself set up so I never have to mess with this procedure at all. I just unscrew the left cup instead of the right one. The threaded left cup has flats that can much more easily be held in a vise so that the whole wheel can be turned to unscrew the cup. The left side is a left handed single thread.
