My friends dad fell on his bicycle without a helmet and is now a vegetable. What more do you need to know???

This man will never know his grandchildren, no longer knows his own wife or children, and basically has no quality of life.

Maybe I'll go to the hospital and visit the rider in my neighborhood who got into an accident a week ago. He couldn't stop in time when a van short stopped in front of him and he went right through the back window head first (with a helmet).

Just put on a damn helmet.
I'm sorry about your friend's dad, but anecdotal evidence is worthless.

I have a friend who lost his balance and fell out of his pickup truck bed while it was parked in his driveway. Coma for more than 2 months, slow recovery for the past year. So what - would you recommend we wear helmets doing household chores?

Life has dangers, don't blow them out of proportion.

Again, I wear a helmet - like the look and it's comfortable. But I don't think it's "essential" for my safety. People are entitled to take their own chances, and riding w/o a helmet is NOT risky.
