Bikes: Trek 7.6 FX

Welcome to the 7.6 family!

I brought mine after only a small amount of research and LBS browsing. The test ride was enough to make up my mind. I do have some conflicted thoughts after putting on >500 miles of commuting/group rides/solos. First of which is that the 7.6 (at least mine anyway) comes with a double compact crank, since SE Pennsy is quite hilly this can be an issue - on the flip side it has made my thighs either put up of shut up (down) - plus I get Bike cred and can look down my nose at all those wimpy triple users (which will probably be me in another month or so when I buy my second bike...) I did upgrade the stock rear cog from an 11-26 to a MTB-esque 11-32 which did not require a new rear deraileur or a new chain - however the 50-32 gear combination is something to stay away from (which it should be anyway). Note I plan on putting the original cog back on after a while since the gear "spread" is noticeably more choppy and it can be hard sometimes to find the "right" gear for some road conditions and cadence

The other main issue, and the one leading me to looking into a second bike, is that after some distance (>20 miles) the flat bar setup is too confining, my hands get numb and I feel like I just can't adopt enough different positions to help my 46 year old body go the distances I want to. I have replaced the stock seat, which while fine for <10-15 miles, felt like sitting on Iron after an hour or so. My current seat is a Specialized Avatar 143 which is not right for me either - it is OK mind, just it feels more like a road bike saddle than the somewhat more upright FX style ride. To help the hand numbness I put on a pair or Ergon bar ends which helped a little in offering some extra hand postions, but still didn't help my body position.

Don't misread my opinions as saying that my 7.6 FX is a "bad" bike, its not, it is totally fine for the "envelope" it is designed for and for me that includes what will be its main duty as a reliable commuter. It has no problem going fast, its certainly decently light when compared to the more normal MUP style MTB style bikes out there. After 500 miles I've had no component failures and only a tweak or two worth of adjustments needed.
