my old steel Shimano biopace rings (big and small) on one of my older roadbikes had more than 100,000km at least and were still pretty serviceable. occasional lube, some years a new chain, but nothing sensible. aluminum is just not as strong, no mattter what kind of treatment they give it.

your problem sounds weird tho.
