Well with the Surly, the bearings are of the cartridge variety and as such you can replace the whole bearing assembly easily and cheaply. With the XT's if you bugger the bearing race you have to replace the hub. Both are fine hubs, and will serve you well, but Shimano is still using the venerable cup and cone bearing system where.
