Sorry, "frictionless" was not the best choice of words. I should have said "less friction".
I have already broken a the left shift lever off of a brand new chorus brifter, so this thread is the result of my doing some trouble shooting and research on ways of reducing friction.
And while doing the trouble shooting, I realized that the paint under the cable had completely worn down to the shiny metal underneath.
