Garmin will take care of you if you're really having a problem. I had a cadence sensor fail and they sent me a new unit, no questions asked, in only a few days.
As for the GPS receiver update, I think there is a problem in the latest one. The day I installed it my Edge worked fine but when I plugged it into my laptop it hung while tranferrind history to Training Center and when it started working again all my previous history had been cleared from Training Center. There have been a couple of similar reports here on BF with folks complaining of problems after updating their receiver software so I'm betting that Garmin will get hot and release another version shortly.
Make sure that you're performing the reset correctly. It should work to get the unit back up and running. Once it is running again, dig around on their website and I think you can find older software versions if you're having trouble running the latest updates. If they're not available or you can't find them just contact Garmin and explain the whole thing to them.
