It has no component of motorist education whatsoever, so you are left with people who rant on and on about the evils of bike lanes without taking any of meaningful steps toward educating people whether they drive cars OR ride bicycles. And thus their dream goes perpetually unfulfilled. The longer it goes unfulfilled the more the bike lanes succeed.
If you offer nothing of substance, then something fills the void. In this case, bike lanes.
How do bike lane stripes decrease the possibility of motor vehicle drivers harrassing cyclists?
I can't see how they can. If anything they increase harrassment for those cyclists who for whatever reason ride on the 'wrong' side of the stripe.
