Your knees will thank you for it. I built a SS last year because of all the praise from this forum and others. It was great until I walked up a couple of hills ... and my knees still hurt the next day.
If I knew I'd live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself.
FYI: multiple gears does not cure anything. I stopped MTB last summer for a few months because of my knees and it had gears. It is better to focus on knee maintenance, i.e. stretching, working out your leg muscles, standing up and pedaling, etc. Sorry, but switching is not the "cure."
