I have a triple, but heck, I ride a touring bike. No point pretending to be top of the Cat 1 heap riding that thing.
I also have never actually used my triple, but once I start doing double centuries, we'll see.
And as far as I'm concerned, you're using a granny ring when you're in the 36 on your "compact double."

Only if your compact double has a 36. My previous bike (may she rest in peace) had a 63/52. She's gone now, looking down on us from bike heaven, but her little sister sports a somewhat more modest 56/42. Still . . . . who you callin' granny????
