if you decide to paint them yourself, make sure you use a primer first.
Follow directions on how to prep the metal for paint, use a good primer, and a number of coats of the paint, with plenty of drying time and sanding between coats.
the paint will still get scuffed and scratched (like any other paint), but if you use a good primer, at least it will not flake or peel off....
