I hear you man. I finally got some Lycra cycling shorts yesterday and I rode with them for 18 miles yesterday.
I just started riding about 1 month ago and pretty much went to flat platforms after using the Wellgos for a few times. I love the Keo Classics I got from PBK for $50 and have had no problem clipping in and out. I got about 30 miles on the Keos so nothing to drastic but I can tell they are 1000 times better than the Wellgos.
