Tour de France Organisers Strip Riis of 1996 Win
8 June 2007, Friday
Tour de France organisers said on Friday they stripped 1996 champion, Danish rider Bjarne Riis, of his win in the competition, after his admission last month that he took banned performance-enhancing sustances.
The news is the latest development in the scandal rocking the competition and the sport, plagued by constant substance abuse controversies in the past decade.
Although the organisers of the Tour no longer consider Riis the winner of the 1996 tour, when he put an end to the five-year reign of Spanish cycling legend Miguel Indurain, it is up to the sport's governing body UCI to formally strip the Dane of his title.
Tour officials did not say whether German Jan Ullrich, a teammate of Riis in the Deutsche Telekom team, would get the win.
A number of Telekom riders admitted to taking performance-enhancing drugs in the 1990s with then team manager Walter Godefroot turning a blind eye. Godefroot denies the accusations.
