Ok this may crazy right but I have done this many time with door installations and many other items. You take a hardwood tooth pick, split in half and then place it in the hole with a small amount hanging ( bend the small end over the shoe base) out so it will not fall in the hole when you insert the screw. Start the screw slowly and then the wood will take up the space and tighten the screw. Try it it works. I learned this many many years ago as a apprentice carpenter form an older wiser carpenter.
