A friend of mine carries an assembly checklist in his wallet that he refers to every time he reassembles or does maintenance on his bike. He's been riding forever and is an outstanding mechanic but he's also human. I've joked about this but he's never had an issue/problem because of an oversight.

It's rudimentary but an easy and effective way to avoid disaster.
