I know this is an old thread but those that say the Campy design is superior make me laugh.
The Shimano design uses a ONE PIECE crank spindle solidly attached to the drive side spider. The left side crank arm is attached with foolproof pinch bolts. Removing side play is no more difficult than adjusting a headset - it's easier actually.
The Campy Hirth joint splits the spindle in two pieces and there is sure to be relative motion between them. Shouldn't be a problem per say but no way it's a superior design. In fact, it very clearly smacks of being different for difference sakes; Shimano came out with the design first and Campy didn't want to be accused of copying.
