Once you get the bike/box thing squared away, there's a couple other things to consider. I've found the air conditioning aboard the Empire builder to be down right cold. So, wear something more than shorts/t-shirt... especially if you're going to be on the train overnight. Also, the dining car is handy, but expensive. Packing your own food and drink will save you some bucks.
