This is definitely wrong.
I ride for fitness, commuting, recreation, and I race. Yesterday, I was spinning about 105rpm in 120 gear inches. That comes out to about 35mph on 700x23s. I had a very valid reason to be doing that, which was not losing my position in the pack. And I'm a moderately strong cat 4. Not sure where you're getting this stuff about top 400 pros.
You ride ALONE, cruising along at 35 mph? You gotta enter the Tour de France. The last time Lance Armstrong rode alone for an hour, cruising along at 35 mph was....it was....well, it was never.
