Salt Lake City to Colorado Springs

A friend has proposed biking over the American Rockies, west to east, starting in Utah and ending up in Colorado Springs.

He is suggesting taking roads that parallel the major Interstates, like Highway 40 (through Craig, Steamboat Springs) and Highway 24.

Does anyone have experience with tours in this part of the world? What is the traffic like? Are these routes suitable for credit card touring?
