Lube Your Speedplay Cleats
I've had the Speedplay "Light Action" pedals for about a month now, and am pretty happy with them. When I bought them the salesguy warned me that I needed to disassemble and clean/lube the cleats periodically, or they would get difficult to clip out from.
Guess who thought "periodically" meant "next fall sometime"?
Near the end of a 70 mile yesterday, at a red light, I rolled up slowly hoping it would change and I wouldn't have to dismount. At the last minute I realized I would need to clip out with the right foot, but found I couldn't. Then I tried the left foot, but by that time I was going too slow, and tipped right over on my left elbow. Ouch!
Today I took the cleats apart, cleaned, and reassembled them, and went for a ride. MUCH better. I can pop right out of the clips with no problem.
It only took a couple of minutes to lube the cleats. I won't wait as long next time to do it...
