Oh so your saying it must be my 31 pound Le Tour(thats without rack or extras) rather than its fenders thats slowing me down?
So the fender drag isn't noticable on short to meduim rides at a modest pace is what I gathered from that. However I think that that light drag may have quite an effect on your energy/fatige level over the course of a long ride, even at moderate speeds, as it drip drip drains the energy. Most of my rides probably aren't long enough to notice, and if I feel like a century or two its only three screws each wheel so the fenders are spared for now.
I like those wood fenders, I'd have to get some wood grain contact paper to make the rest of the bike match though. Really get some double takes.
