With a little work and adjustment you can probably make your hybrid more suitable for road use. If it has 700c wheels, get some 700x23 tires, and lightweight tubes.

Get bar ends in order to create more hand positions. Maybe get a longer, lower stem to lower your bode position. And get a more road type saddle to go with the more laid out position.

Hopefully, its a solid fork. If not lock it out. If not lockable, then set the preload to the max. You can maybe find a solid fork for $50 after you do everything else.

Then ride ride ride. By the time you're fast enough to really need a better road bike, you'll have had plenty of time riding with guys on all kinds of bikes and you'll have a pretty good idea what you really need or want.
