the bike is tucked away 20 feet from my desk with no comments from anyone yet. Which means that it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb 
Maybe you should somehow make it "stick out like a sore thumb".
Striking up a conversation about the bike and commuting is how you "recruit" co-workers to ride with you. :cool:
