Ok, here's the follow-up:

Made it to Bethany Beach by nightfall and was able to score a room for the night. Inquiries about the fireworks display yielded that they were cancelled both at Bethany and in Ocean City due to the winds. I rode into Ocean City the next morning and hung out on the boardwalk for a while. After getting something to eat, I headed out Route 50 to see if I could find lodging. The Bedtime Inn had vacancies, so I stayed there, checking out on Sunday morning.

The towns that I hit along the way were:

Chesapeak City
Middletown
Odesa
Dover (west)
Milford
Lewes
Rehoboth Beach
Dewey Beach
Bethany Beach
Fenwick Island
Ocean City

On the way back, I made a stop at Point Henlopen Park (which added another 10 miles to the return trip--thought I could make a shortcut there--I was wrong), made a wrong turn north of Dover and wound up on Smyrna Leipsic Rd which took me into Smyrna, Delaware. From there I followed Dupont Pkwy to Route 71 North. Routes 15 and 286 got me back into Chesapeake City, Maryland.
