I'm not sure about Schwinn headsets being smaller, but I think this one's standard.
I'll look into that metal spraying, sounds like a reasonable way to go. It would be nice though to find an original headset--does anyone have any suggestions about where to find that type of thing? It's just a beefy old frame with the Swiss Victorianox symbol on the front, apparently from the 40s.
