My two 1988 Miyata 215 touring bikes came from the factory with black foam on the bars. I razored it off mine and put on proper cork tape asap and never looked back. The wife's Miyata has black foam to this day.

Dad always said "son, never argue with drunks, nuts, armed men, or women". It is good advice.
