Bikes: '84 Centurion Accordo RS, '06 Gary Fisher Marlin, '06 Schwinn Fastback 27, '06 Litespeed Teramo

I guess they are compact. My bike has a 50-34 in the front. I'm not sure about the rear cogs, though its a 10 speed. So what is the purpose of this? Does this make one faster compared to a 52T? I thought it would be the opposite.
