Sorry to hear about your accident. You may have answered your own question when you said it was an accident waiting to happen. I would treat that particular intersection as as a pedestrian and walk my bike across. This gives you time to react and turn back if necessary. I have a very similar situation on my commute, and most cars that are sitting in the intersection ready to go have no idea that a bike path crosses there.
