In all honesty it may well be brilliant. Maybe the Maddy guy only wants the lever there for emergencies but doesn't want to grow reliant on it. Keep it out of the way for every day riding but there in an emergency. Where is your car's emergency brake? Is it convenient or conveniently out of the way? Just a thought. Flame me at will.
