I was going for a ride last night with a friend. He was telling me that in the 1970's he used to grind pencil leads and pour the dust into bearings (instead of using grease). I guess the idea was to have a powdered graphite lube.

Has anybody else heard of this? He was living in England at the time during the bicycle race fever that was going on there. You may also recall drilling holes into every flat surface to reduce weight, etc. Crazy days for sure.
