I was in the same situation as the OP a with a Jamis Aragon hybrid. I bought it to get back into cycling, and it served that purpose for 3 years. As i felt the need for more performance, I changed to flat bars ($10 out of the parts bin at an LBS), adjusted the stem as far down and forward as I could, and changed to skinnier tires. I replaced the saddle with something more suited to an aggressive position when the original saddle wore out.
I considered swapping the suspension fork for a rigid fork but decided it wouldn't be cost effective. So last winter I built up a Surly Cross-Check with drop bars, which is what I ride now.
I think the sequence of starting with a hybrid and transitioning to a road bike is something a lot of people on this forum have done, and it worked well for me.
I think you've gotten good advice in this thread. You may ultimately end up with a different bike, and there is a lot of information available in this forum that will help you if (when?) you decide to go in that direction.
