Taking Turns on Long Rides

Hi all. Yesterday I went for my first long ride, 75 miles, with a buddy. What a difference it makes to share the load. We started by taking 4 minutes in the lead but towards the end shifted to 3 then 2 minutes.

Question. Is there an optimum frequency for switching the lead or is it more of a function of the individuals in the group?

Happy cycling!
