Bikes: 2009 Trek Madone WSD, 2005 Independent Fabrication Crown Jewel SE, 2007 Fuji Absolute SX flat-bar roadie, 2005 Dahon Boardwalk 7 folder, 2009 GT Avalanche MTB, 1996 Trek 920 (beater bike) and last but certainly not least 1974 Schwinn Paramount

Sigh...

I think she'd be better off being patient and waiting for a good quality used bike to become available. You just aren't going to find anything new of decent quality for less than $400.00. And like a previous poster said, nothing will turn someone off the sport quicker than a bike that won't shift and keeps falling apart.

But, if you're pretty much set on buying one of those eBay bikes, I think this one looks a bit better for just a little bit more money. The Sora components aren't the greatest, but better than the 2200. It has a carbon fork which will make the bike ride more smoothly.

And this one is even better. It has a 105 rear derailleur with what appears to be Tiagra shifters. I have this drive train on one of my bikes and it works fine.

Good luck!
