I didn't think of the hot water till this morning, I wish I had last night! I figure if I want to avoid trying to drill them out I could always just dremel new slots into the female side of the bolt and go about it that way... I figured I'd maybe drill it out using sequentially larger bits to avoid accidentally going too large but I guess I could just measure my bits against a fresh bolt to get the right size... Thanks for the tips!

Yeah, I've got a few packs of short chainring bolts - with all the conversions I'd been working on for friends I figure having a few sets kickin around would make sense.
