I believe Cannondale had some problems early on with frames cracking, but they sorted those out ages ago and now make some of the finest Al frames around. (disclosure - I have an F700 MTB)
It's a credit to the frame that I recently took an imact in the rear from a car and the frame barely even went out of alignment (<3mm) let alone cracked (not to mention the Mavic rim that didn't even need truing).
In racing circles over here, you ride Italian or nothing, Cannondale being the noticeable exception. Try getting a warranty job done on an Italian frame and it'll be tears before midnight. Cannondale - no problem. It's got that finest of American institutions beind it: good customer service. My younger brother races A/B grade and has two 'Dales, and laughs at the problems his mates have when they crack their Italian show-ponies.
