Another point--you can gauge how hard you hit the pedals about 2 hours after you ride and have been sitting. If you stand up for the first time and your legs are sore, you hit it pretty hard. If you stand up and they aren't sore at all, then you should be OK for the next day. If you stand up and sit right back down again, tomorrow is a "recovery" day!
