The ones I encountered appeared to just be blackflies.. tiny little black things. I always thought aphids were green (and apparently I was correct), but oddly enough when I searched on wikipedia one of their aliases is "blackfly". I don't get it. When I say "blackfly" I mean gnats.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simuliidae.
