If she became car-free she'd be more often riding alone, at night, in dicy neighborhoods, etc. than she is now. Safety is a concern.
As for the 'where to ride',
claim your lane. By law you have as much right to use the street as a car. Ride about where if you were a car the right front wheel would be.
