It rained most of last night and so the bike path was definitely wet in places. I had been playing leap frog with another commuter. He had just gotten in front of me after taking a short cut and was trying to keep up my pace. Not possible since I had passed him previously, but I figured I'd wait to pass him again until after going through a road underpass just ahead. This underpass is dangerous because going into and coming out of it are downhill and blind turns, and people often cut the corners

. I usually whistle Dixie going through it so people know I'm coming.
Anyway, the approach to the underpass was wet and so his tires on his road bike were wet. He went into it pretty quickly no problem as this turn is maybe 30 degrees. But he then went into the 90 degree, immediate turn out of the underpass without slowing down. Maybe 10-12 miles per hour, I would usually do it at 3-5. Down he went, his wheels sliding out almost immediately as he turned. I was about 20-30 feet behind him and was able to stop. His right side was scraped up and his bike was ok. I asked him if he was OK and he seemed to be fine.
I can't help but think his trying to stay ahead of me caused his crash. He didn't appear to be a very experienced rider as his saddle height was too low and he was spinning in too easy a gear to maintain any real speed. I felt sorry for him but there wasn't much I could do.
I was just amazed that he flew into that sharp right turn with the path being so wet. What was he thinking?
