Did a kitchen remodel and living room floor refinish in 2000 the kitchen has maple and the living room is douglas fir the house is 102 years old so thats what they used here in the pacific northwest. I would never have hardwood floors in a kitchen again I paid a bloody fortune for it and after 7 years those floors look like they are 20 years old. The finish was supposed to be the best according to several sources. This floor was put in and then finished then finished on site and the guy that did it was supposed to be the best around again accornding to several sources. they had to come back an redo the living room and the kitchen this time with better results. After 7 years the old Doug fir looks like a million bucks even though its softer than the maple. If we live long enough I'm gonna put vinyl over that *&^%$ maple YRMV
